I am grateful to be able to play a small role in introducing people to Jesus through being on the Worship Team at church. It has been an anchor in my life and I’ve been blessed by getting to serve with a lot of amazing people (who are also insanely talented). Some songs really stuck with me to the point that I wanted to cover them… kinda!
Earlier this year a friend was telling to me about how a bible translation was recently completed in Hawaiian Pidgin. Like me, you may think “I did not even know that was a language” and also “What…?” or “Why?” He went on to tell me about “heart languages” and something kind of clicked. Our heart language is the language we naturally speak. It is the language we were raised speaking and it is the language we best learn in. While one person may read the NLT bible where Romans 12:1-2 says:
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice- the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. Don’t copy the behaviors and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
And that person will be able to understand what they read, it could be confusing to someone who’s heart language is Spanish or French. Or Hawaiian Pidgin, which would be:
“My braddahs an sistahs, so den, wat? God, he give you guys plenny chance. Az why I like tell you dis: let God stay in charge a you, jalike you give God one sacrifice dat stay alive. You guys know wat God like fo you guys do? He like you guys go all out to him. Wen you make lidat, az good you know, cuz dass how you show God love an respeck. Eh! No do wat da peopo nowdays stay tell you fo do! Mo betta, you guys let God make you guys tink diffren kine inside, fo you tink diffren bout eryting. Den you can figga wat God like you fo do. An da ting God like you fo do, stay good, make God stay good inside, an erytime stay perfeck.”
Beautiful! Why is this relevant? Because what if, like a heart language, we each have a style of music that speaks to us? R&B may make one person come alive but be uninteresting to someone else. What if the style of a worship song would better resonate with someone in a different genre? So… I decided to pick a few of my favorites and change them (crappily) to my heart language. Who knows? Maybe someone who has no interest in worship music would give them a chance? All I can do is decide to follow the nudges and show up. The rest is in God’s hands.
